So, we supported the uprising in Egypt because social media gurus outside of the country created "citizen journalists" - and since then the unrest has not stopped in the country but our news has stopped covering it so heavily. Then, several other middle eastern countries staged several other social media uprisings, of which, Syria is probably the most ingenious. In this case, the activists have been able to point two pictures of the uprising at the same time - In English we see pacifist rebels fighting a dictator. In Arabic, they see strong militants fighting for Allah. Same rebels, two stories appealing to the audience they were designed for to get the most of Middle Eastern and Western financing.
And now we have Ukraine. They had an elected president, too. He was pro-Russian. Since the country is half- Ukrainian and half-Russian, the Ukrainians kicked him out. They set up their own government and are planning to hold elections, but really, with the hatred that has existed between Russians and Ukrainians for a long time, how fair will the election be a representing both sides. The only place that happens is in America, and that is probably because we can elect our own state leaders.
So, not only did the US give Ukraine (lets say the interim government of Ukraine) 50 million, but the IMF has now given them 17 billion. Ukraine took some of this money and flew a couple of military helicopters into a town where it proceeded to kill almost as many civilians as it did "pro-Russian activists". The pro-Russian activists defended the city by taking out the helicopters. The citizens then went public, begging Russian to come in and save them. Of course President Obama said since the pro-Russians defended the citizens by taking out the helicopters, the citizens begging for Russian help don't count.
So, tell me Mr. President, if all the Russian spies living in America kick you out of office and force you to flee to California, and then they send two helicopters to take out your family, will you tell those who are armed and willing to fight for you not to shoot because that would give the false impression that you are not peaceful about the whole thing? And what about the protesters in Syria that we at least supported initially - here is a rather graphic video of one eating a government soldier. {Please note: I have heard about this video from reliable sources, but due to the graphic nature have not viewed it. I chose this one because the initial cover is not graphic, but did not test it. There are many other links showing rebel atrocities on YouTube.}
Although I am thankful that European governments seem to be wise enough to rein in our President to declaring more sanctions, I am concerned that they are even willing to remotely get involved in this. Russia is not going to let us wound them through sanctions too much. If the sanctions start to hurt, I highly doubt they are just going to roll over and give back eastern Ukraine.
